What can kids really learn from coding classes?

It is evident that COVID has accelerated digital transformation in every aspect of our lives, from Zoom calls to buying groceries online we have embraced technology. It should come as no surprise that parents are observing changes in the lives and asking: should my son or daughter learn how to code?

At The Logic Coders, we have seen parents of children as young as 4 years old seeking coding classes! We appreciate parent's desire for wanting the best for their children, we do too. However, it does beg the question - what do kids actually learn in coding classes? This is not only important for you as parents in deciding whether to send your child for coding classes, but for you have the right expectations.

This discussion is best segmented in to three age groups. We are also assuming that they are learning to code on the Lego EV3 Robotics platform.

Ages 5 to 6

3 Months

Understand that coding is a way of providing instructions to computers

Improve hand eye coordination as they interact with the Lego EV3 pieces, keyboard and mouse

>6 Months

Develop spatial thinking through creating structures in with Lego EV3 pieces

Some understanding of basic coding logic of sequencing and loops

Able to code but mainly through memory and repetition rather than understanding

6 year old learning how to code using EV3 Robotics

Ages 7 to 11

3 Months

Develop spatial thinking through creating structures in with Lego EV3 pieces

Understand basic coding logic of if-else ,sequencing and loops

Able to code partially through understanding but might rely on some memory and repetition

>6 Months

Fully understand basic coding logic of if-else ,sequencing and loops

Able to apply coding logic to solve problems through understanding

Develop appreciation for engineering as they design and build various mechanisms using Lego EV3

primary school students learning how to code

Ages 12 to 16

3 Months

Fully understand basic coding logic of if-else ,sequencing and loops

Able to apply coding logic to solve problems through understanding

Develop appreciation for engineering as they design and build various mechanisms using Lego EV3

>6 Months

Able to apply knowledge at a higher level by solving increasingly complex problems
